Save money with new Discovery Sport deals from What Car? If you want a family SUV with more versatility and off-road ruggedness than the class average, the Discovery Sport delivers that with very few compromises. However, its claimed EV range of 34 miles is no longer class-leading (and lands it in the 12% BiK band), plus the need to accommodate the motor and battery pack means there's no seven-seat option on this version. Most of the petrol and diesel engines have 48V mild-hybrid assistance, but the particularly slick P300e plug-in hybrid is the standout version, thanks to its well engineered integration that allows smooth transition between petrol and electric power. The current versions have plenty of premium appeal and benefit from the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, which help give it a similar feel to the firm's upper-crust Range Rover offerings. Its practical interior is available with seven seats for those who need them. However, it also handles in an impressively tidy fashion, with accurate steering, good body control and surprising agility. True to the Land Rover brand, the four-wheel-drive versions will also go further off road than most owners will ever needs. It's still higher-riding than many of its opponents and affords better visibility. Compared with some of the other options on this list, it’s pretty expensive as well.įacelifted for 2019, the Discovery Sport sits on the same PTA platform as the Range Rover Evoque, but hasn't lost out on any of the characteristics that we liked about the original. The Discovery Sport is the entry-level Land Rover, but that doesn't mean it's short on the brand's trademark capability, comfort or charm. It suffers from a slightly crashy low-speed ride, but is very supple everywhere else, and even offers some dynamism in the corners.Ĭons: So-so economy, rivals have punchier powertrains, PHEV versions don't have seven seats On the road, the X-Trail is an easy-going companion. The front seats are very comfortable, too. In front, the X-Trail feels familiar from the smaller Nissan Qashqai, but that’s a good thing, because there are big buttons for commonly used functions and the infotainment is mostly logical, which makes the car very easy and frustration-free to use. The second row has plenty of space, the rear doors open 90deg and the boot space is competitive. It’s a slightly smaller vehicle than cars like the Hyundai Santa Fe or Skoda Kodiaq, but still offers seven seats as an option. Motorway efficiency is good, but could be better, while efficiency in town is excellent.Īway from the novel powertrain, the new X-Trail is very well considered. The X-Trail gets very close indeed, which makes it a very undemanding car to drive. Nissan claims that its new hybrid system – where the engine only ever powers a generator and the wheels are driven by electric motors – provides an EV driving experience, but with the reassurance that you can simply fill up with petrol. That doesn’t bode well for effortless motoring, but for the e-Power hybrid versions at least, the opposite is true. Unusually, it is powered exclusively by three-cylinder engines. Pros: Good to drive, high-quality interior, option of seven seatsĬons: Not as efficient as the best rivals, smallish boot, jittery low-speed rideįor 2023, there’s an all-new version of Nissan’s largest SUV in Europe. Although the last time Facebook came under cross-hairs, the FTC's $5 billion fine added $10 billion to the company's value. The Messenger Kids app is subject to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and it remains to be seen what legal action, if any, is taken considering this development. Reportedly, the company hasn't removed the group feature from the app itself but shutdown these groups citing the problem as a "technical error" with a promise of such an incident not happening in the future. This resulted in many children left in group chats with unauthorized users, something that goes strictly against the idea of a safe space for children on Messenger Kids. However, the group chat feature with its complex permissions and multiple users left a loophole where an authorized user (say A) could launch a group chat with a child (say B) but then the child (B) was also able to chat with the A's other friends (C,D,E.) within the group who could be complete strangers to child (B). Meant to be used by kids under the age of 13, the Messenger Kids app allows a one-on-one chat only between a child and a user approved by the child's parents. "We recently notified some parents of Messenger Kids account users about a technical error that we detected affecting a small number of group chats," said a representative, adding that they've also provided additional resources to parents regarding the app and online safety. No public statement has yet come from Facebook regarding this development but the company did confirm the authenticity of the alert to the publication. If you have questions about Messenger Kids and online safety, please visit our Help Center and Messenger Kids parental controls. We want you to know that we've turned off this group chat and are making sure that group chats like this won't be allowed in the future. We found a technical error that allowed 's friend to create a group chat with and one or more of 's parent-approved friends. The company has since been closing down such group chats and sending alerts to thousands of users, reports The Verge. Privacy concerns around the company's policies and the way it handles user data have long been a hot topic of discussion and now joining them is the Messenger Kids app, which due to a design flaw has been letting children enter group chats with unapproved strangers.įacebook launched the Messenger Kids app in December 2017 to let kids have a safer alternative to the main Messenger platform, but a recent design flaw discovered in the app has been found going against the app's premise by letting kids into group chats with strangers. It’s easy to post photos and to start Facetime-style video chat. A hot potato: It seems like being on the good side of news for Facebook is becoming an exception rather than the rule. Procurement Services Spend management consulting.DSSI™ Analyze Spend analysis and insights.DSSI™ Platform eProcurement and spend management tools. We do not recommend this feature on range hoods, however, because in the event a grease fire triggers the fan, it could intensify the flame by drawing more air toward it. If the temperature under the microwave is too high, the exhaust fan comes on to draw away the hot air and pull in cooler air from the rest of the kitchen. This feature is standard on over-the-range microwaves, to prevent the microwave electronics from getting damaged by high temperatures. Over-the-range hoods come in a variety of materials, including stainless steel, copper, tempered glass, wood, zinc, and bronze.Ī built-in temperature sensor in some models automatically turns on the fan if the temperature below the hood gets too high. (Island-mount hoods lack a wall or cabinets alongside them to help to funnel fumes, so they should be wider than the cooktop.) Select a model that’s at least as wide as the cooking surface underneath. Range hoods typically span from 30 to 66 inches wide. If the manufacturer provides more than three speeds, the hood should have a variable speed switch that the user can easily set to any speed desired. Any more than three speeds are unnecessary. We recommend a minimum of two speeds: a high-speed setting to use when cooking and a very low (and quiet) speed setting to use after cooking to continue to ventilate the space while you’re eating. Most of the hoods we tested offered from three to six fan speeds. Generally, filters should be washed or replaced every one to three months-or more often if you cook frequently-to keep your range hood running efficiently. There are three main types of range hood filters: stainless steel baffle, aluminum mesh, and charcoal. This convenient feature turns off the fan after a set period of time. Many hoods that we tested that claimed to have modest airflow vented as well as those with twice the airflow. While more airflow means faster ventilation, it doesn’t guarantee better smoke capture and removal in your kitchen. Manufacturers tout the cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air exhausted by their range hoods. These are the range hood features to consider before you go shopping. We do not recommend ductless hoods, because they do not actually exhaust contaminants outside. Its filters trap oil and grease droplets dispersed into the air above the range, and some models include an optional carbon filter to reduce odors. This type of installation draws steam, heat, and smoke from the cooktop, filters it, and returns it to the room. While they can be used anywhere in the kitchen, their main application is in islands where it might not be possible to route ductwork through the ceiling. CR’s past range hood tests found that these were among the least effective at removing smoke and steam. These hoods are designed to capture rising smoke and fumes and exhaust them through ducts running beneath the floor. Because they lack a wall or cabinets alongside them to help funnel fumes, they should be wider than the cooking surface. Island hood models are mounted to and vented through ductwork in the ceiling. Their exposed vent stacks, which vent cooking gases outside, can make a strong design statement. These hoods are an option when there are no cabinets over the range. Typical kitchen cabinets extend only about halfway across the cooktop, so this extension routes steam and smoke away from cabinet faces and back toward the suction end of the range hood. In some models, a shallow hood slides out of the upper kitchen cabinet when you need it. Ductwork inside an adjoining wall, chase, soffit, or ceiling can exhaust smoke and fumes outside. These mount under the bottom of a wall cabinet above the cooktop. The layout of your kitchen and the location of your cooktop largely dictate the kind of range hood you can install. Here are the different types of range hoods to consider.
